Scholarship Opportunities

In addition to philanthropic grantmaking, Community Foundation of North Louisiana also offers a number of student scholarships. The following CFNLA scholarships have been made possible by generous donors. Each scholarship has different requirements. Colonel Steven L. dePyssler Mission Support Scholarship

  • Named after Colonel Steven L. dePyssler, this scholarship is awarded to dependents of active military members at Barksdale Air Force Base. Colonel dePyssler retired from the United States Air Force in 1979 after 38 years of active duty, including serving in World War II, the Korean War, the French-Indo China War, and Vietnam.
  • REQUIREMENT: You are a dependent of an active military member at Barksdale Air Force Base

Community Bank Foundation College Scholarship

  • The Community Bank Foundation College Scholarship is a $1,000.00 scholarship award given to a student employed by Community Bank or is the child of an employee of the Bank.
  • Eligibility:
      • One of the student’s parents must be employed by Community Bank or the student must be employed by Community Bank.
      • A 3.0 cumulative high school grade point average OR a minimum ACT score of 20
      • Submit 7 or 8 semester high school transcripts
      • Submit a copy of ACT scores
      • Students must be enrolling or enrolled in a college, university or technical school in the United States as a full-time student (12+ hours).
      • There are no restrictions related to major.
      • Student will receive the award ($1,000.00) upon providing an acceptance from an accredited College, University, or Technical School.
      • An individual Student can only win the scholarship once. However, they may re-apply if they do not receive the scholarship as long as they are enrolled in a college, university, or technical school for undergraduate studies.

Zachary J. Harris Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility:
    • Louisiana Resident
    • Graduating senior of Fountainebleau High School in Mandeville, LA
    • On track to graduate with a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA
    • Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited higher educational institution in Louisiana. (First preference will be given to a student attending Louisiana Tech University. If no applicant plans to attend Louisiana Tech, scholarships may also be given to students attending another accredited higher educational institution in Louisiana including, but not limited to:
      • Northwest Louisiana Technical College
      • Louisiana Delta Community College
      • Northwestern School of Nursing
      • Louisiana State University in Shreveport
    • For incoming freshmen only
    •  Criteria:
      • Academic Performance based ACT scores and GPA
      • Leadership qualities demonstrated in a short essay

The Shreveport Geological Society

  • The Shreveport Geological Society Scholarship was established in 1986 to award scholarships and provide financial aid to worthy students for their study of geology at an accredited institution at either the graduate or undergraduate level.
  • REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be a full time student pursuing a degree in geology and enrolled in, or be about to enroll in, an accredited educational institution that has a department or course of study in the field of geology. Applicants must exhibit some need for financial assistance in order to enable them to complete their course of geological studies. Applicants also must show sufficient academic ability to enable them to complete courses of study necessary to graduate.

The George Thurman Norton and Sue Annie Tinsley Norton Memorial Fund

  • The George Thurman Norton and Sue Annie Tinsley Norton Memorial Fund was established in 1998 by James A. (Dolph) Norton and Fay-Tyler Norton (Mrs. James A.) to recognize and encourage the further education of graduates of Haynesville High School in Claiborne Parish. From among prospective graduates of Haynesville High School, the recipient should be the student whose educational achievements and community citizenship most warrant recognition the year of the award. The graduate should be exemplary for study accomplishments and community service. This is not a renewable award.
  • REQUIREMENT: You are a graduate of Haynesville High School in Claiborne Parish.

The Thomas E. (Tem) McElroy, Jr. Scholarship Fund

  • The Thomas E. (Tem) McElroy, Jr. Scholarship will be awarded to a Byrd High School senior who chooses to study science and engineering in college with excellent academic record, leadership skills and community involvement.
  • REQUIREMENTS:
    • You are a C. E. Byrd High School Senior
    • Your major will focus on science or engineering
    • You have an excellent academic record
    • You have shown leadership skills and community involvement

The William Roy Keene Memorial Scholarship

  • The William Roy Keene Memorial Scholarship will be awarded based on academic performance and essay questions to a senior at C. E. Byrd High School with the following requirements:
  • REQUIREMENTS:
      • You are on track to graduate this academic year with a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
      • You are planning to pursue a degree at an accredited higher educational institution in the United States or a vocational school in the United States.
      • You have taken a minimum of one Advanced Placement courses in one or more of the following subject areas: US History, European History, Psychology, US Government, Human Geography, or World History.
      • You have shown leadership skills and community involvement

The Evelyn Holcomb Hightower Scholarship

  • The Evelyn Holcomb Hightower Scholarship was established in 1995 by William Hightower and Dr. Patricia Bates to assist worthy Homer High School graduates in pursuit of their studies at Louisiana state-supported colleges or universities. Each applicant must be a Homer High School graduating senior with an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher and must be among the top 10 or 10 percent of the graduating class. He or she must submit a one- or two-page, single-spaced, typed essay that demonstrates academic accomplishments, evidence of leadership and involvement in community and school activities. Financial need may be a consideration in the selection.
  • REQUIREMENTS:
      • You are a Homer High School graduating senior
      • You have an overall grade point average of 3.4 or higher
      • You are in the top 10 or 10% of the graduating class

Haley Scholarship

  • The Haley Scholarship award winner will be chosen from among those students who have previously awarded the Hightower Scholarship. Those students will be given written instructions on the method for applying for the Haley Scholarship.

The Larry Wayne LaBorde Memorial Scholarship

  • The Larry Wayne LaBorde Memorial Scholarship was established in 2024 by to recognize and encourage the further education of a graduating senior(s) who is a member in good standing of First Methodist Church Shreveport. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition and fees required for the enrollment or attendance of the student at a qualifying educational institution, and the fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction at the qualifying educational institution.
  • REQUIREMENT: You are a member in good standing of First Methodist Church Shreveport.
