A Night of Hope and Healing

April 6, 2020 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Free

On Monday, April 6, Louisiana Public Broadcasting will present A Night of Hope and Healing. This special broadcast event includes the premiere of two documentaries that examine childhood trauma, the root cause of many of society’s greatest issues, and what answers and hope scientific research is providing to survivors.

At 9PM Broken Places explores why some children are severely damaged by early adversity while others are able to thrive. By revisiting childhood trauma victims profiled decades ago, learn how their experiences shaped their lives as adults. Broken Places interweaves these narratives with commentary from nationally renowned experts to help viewers better understand the devastating impact of childhood adversity, as well as the inspiring characteristics of resilience. This documentary is from the producers of the public media initiative, Chasing the Dream: Poverty and Opportunity in America.

At 10PM Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope chronicles the new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction and disease. This documentary delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of new treatments to prevent Toxic Stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior. However, as experts and practitioners are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope uses beautiful animation and compelling characters to explore the science and the solutions. This documentary is a production of KPJR Films.

In 2019, the Community Foundation of North Louisiana (CFNLA) screened Resilience in Shreveport to sold-out audiences as part of its initiatives to address the childhood mental health crisis identified by a consortium of local juvenile judges, nonprofits, pediatricians and the public school system. CFNLA is partnering with LPB to underwrite a broadcast of this acclaimed documentary to give audiences statewide the opportunity to hear the message that children and adults can overcome trauma suffered at a young age.

A Night of Hope and Healing is underwritten by the Community Foundation of North Louisiana.
